The Great Bake at Wilstead Lower School

Bake-Off_PanoramaLast year we held our first ever Wilstead Bake Off and it was a real Show Stopper.  Friday 9th October, 2015 saw our second edition of this fun competition with a new savoury category this time.   Did our children and parents rise to the occasion?

As we arrived for school Friday morning a steady batch of cakes, breads, tarts and biscuits were whisked into the school ready for the afternoon judging.  The sweet smell of cakes gently wafted around the school all morning bringing a promise of things to come.  It was clear from the glimpses of cakes under the foil and in their tins that the standard this year was very high but who would be the Star Baker?

Our-Own-Paul-&-MaryJudgingJust after lunch the tables were set out in the hall and the cakes were laid out in class order with a final table for the parents and staff entries.  It all looked amazing and the smell was heavenly, but was there a show stopper?  With forks in hand Mr Robichaud and Mrs Wooding (our very own Paul and Mary) started the long and careful process of judging.  With concentration on their faces and a succession of yum’s and mmm’s the two tried, tasted and tested each tempting morsel, gradually narrowing down the field to the two best in each class.  It was a real technical challenge but eventually the short list was agreed and the judges went off to chose their winners.

I felt really nervous all day waiting for them to tell us the results.

It was to a buzz of excitement from the parents and guests that the children came into the packed hall ready for the prize giving.  In the best tradition Mr Robichaud eked out the moments before the results were announced.  The judges praised the high level of the entries, the effort and dedication that had gone into each one.  Wilstead had again proved what a generous lot we are, helping to raise dough both for the school and Cancer Research and not a soggy bottom in sight.  We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made an entry, bought a cake, gave a donation or came to support us on the day.
