WOW! What a fantastic day full of colourful characters.
This is the first year that we have focused so strongly on World Book Day at Wilstead Lower School. The enthusiasm of the children, staff and parents have made this a huge success and the first of many to come.
World Book Day was designated by unESco as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. Now in its 17th year, World Book Day aims to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading.
So what did Wilstead do?
Our day started with the most colourful whole-school assembly we have seen this year. Each year group showed the school their amazing costumes and a few children introduced their character and their favourite book. Mr Robichaud (our new Head Master after Easter) came in – dressed in a Canadian Hockey outfit like the one in “The Hockey Sweater” story. He read us excerpts from his favourite “Mr Gum” book from his childhood.
The day was so busy that we used lunch time too. Our children brought in books that they have loved in the past and swapped them for a new one that another child had brought in. As if this wasn’t enough, the children also had a quiz on famous book characters – unsurprisingly they correctly identified all of them.
World Book Day was exciting because we got to swap books we have read for new ones that you haven’t read before. My favourite book today was Mr Gum! Yr2 student

Everyone worked really hard today in their mixed-age groups, I was so proud of them all, especially the year 4 children who lead some of the work. I think we’ve all found a new book on world book day. Mrs Robertson, Interim Head Teacher

During the day we have had many book themed activities running throughout the school. As it was a special day, the children were divided into sets containing children from each year group which was very exciting! Along side the discussions about which character they were, the children made beautiful bookmarks, created colourful new book covers for famous books, enacted famous scenes from well known books and performed crazy, creative character sketches of their favourite book characters.
We would like to say a huge thank you to all parents and carers who did such a magnificent job with the children’s costumes.
So what did the teachers dress up as? Well, take a look at the photo below and see if you can guess.
